Bequia is abuzz this time year as we head into the Easter Holidays. The harbour is vibrant and the beaches are packed!
Traditionally, Easter in Bequia invites sailors from around the world to join in on fiercely competitive yacht races and entertaining onshore activities. Though the weekend now operates on a smaller scale than previous years, sailing remains prevalent on our little island.
This year, Hamilton hosts Junior Double Ender racing for the next generation of sailors on Easter Saturday, as well as coconut and gum boat races. Throughout the rest of the year, fishing, sailing and boat building remain key parts of many Bequian’s livelihoods. Each Saturday, our young sailors can be spotted on the horizons of Admiralty Bay and beyond. An important organisation for fostering a love of sailing, the Junior Sailing Academy has participated in and won several competitions. Take a trip on the other side of the island where Paget Farm – a maritime village – is home to many fishermen and divers. Check out the Fisheries and the Ramp for catches of the day and look out for the beautifully colourful single-engine boats that the West Indies is known for. Back in Port Elizabeth, you’ll find the perfect souvenir to sum up your time on our seafaring island.
